Our Chore System

The beginning of a new year is always a good time to make a fresh start.  So many Moms are struggling with trying to find a chore system that works for their family, and trying to figure out which chores would be age appropriate for their children.  I struggled with this as well, but after spending a lot of time researching how others have been successful, I developed our own system.  And it has worked very well for us for the past 18 months.

I did blog about it a little but here is the complete system - ready to go - all you have to do is print the files, make up a chart similar to mine and away you go!  Super inexpensive.  Super easy.  Enjoy!

Steps to Implementing the Chore System At Your House:

1.  Make a chart with pockets for each of the children who will be responsible for doing chores.  I used a plain piece of bristol board from the dollar store, cut some squares for the pockets and simply taped them to the chart.  I used colourful stickers for their names just to make it more exciting (!) for the kids - and added a few stickers as well.
We have one pocket for CHORES TO DO & another for COMPLETED CHORES for each of the kids.

Total cost was $2.00 :)

2.  Print off the chores.  It can be as simple as printing them onto paper or you can do what I did and print them onto colourful stickers and put them onto blank recipe cards.  Paper would work just fine - although you may have to print them more often as they won't be as sturdy.  I gave the chores funny or silly names just to give the kiddos a laugh.  They still appreciate the goofy names all these months later.

Total cost:  $5.00 :)

3.  Put all of your chore cards into a simple recipe box.  I usually put the chore cards into each child's pocket before I go to bed so it is all ready to go in the morning.  Depending on the type of chore I choose for them, they could have just one or 2-3.

4.  We have 15 minutes set aside in our schedule each morning and then again each afternoon and this is when they kiddos get their chores done.  In the beginning, I spent a lot of time showing them how to do each chore.  But the up-front investment of time was well worth it.  They know how to do each chore, and what Mom expects.

It is really very simple to set up and very simple to manage.  Hope it helps some of the moms out there.
